Powerful and adjustable, this portable air conditioner from Royal Sovereign lets you cool the house where heat and humidity are worst. Because it moves on casters and features a 5-foot venting hose, the unit installs quickly and can be stored for winter without much labor or time. The air conditioner's touchpad control features a clear display window and illuminated lights to indicate current settings. Recommended for areas up to 300 feet, the unit features two fan speeds, electronic temperature selection, and three function modes--cooling, fan, and automatic, which triggers operation based on ambient temperatures. A 12-hour timer programs the machine to turn on or off anywhere from 1 to 12 hours in the future, making it easy to cool the house for the evening or shut it off during sleep. For added convenience, Royal Sovereign includes a remote control that manages all functions.

Equipped with manually controlled horizontal and vertical louvers, the air conditioner also includes a washable and reusable clean air filter. Its sturdy venting hose can be extended from one to five feet, and the draining tank automatically interrupts operation once full. The unit can also be run using the included draining hose instead. Though portable, the air conditioner is no lightweight appliance, so assume it will take some floor space and some muscle to move. It measures 16 by 15 by 29 inches, weighs approximately 64 pounds, and carries a full one-year warranty. --Emily Bedard

"A life saver" 2009-12-05
By Mario Chiaramonte (Glendale, CA)
We've been using the A/C for about 3 years, now. It gets incredibly hot in our room, during the summers, and while I won't claim that this actually cools it a whole lot, it does make a difference and since I always have it pointed on the bed, or the computer (depending on where I'm at!), it really makes the heat manageable. Our current room is the coolest in the house, though, and lowering the temperature by 3 or 4 degrees is about all it takes to make a big difference. When we used to be in the back room, however, it was good to have it pointing at you, but since that room reaches temperatures above 90F in the summer and is poorly insulated, this didn't cool the room more than a degree or two, which left the room still above 90 degrees! It was great to have it pointing at us, though. It's not too noisy, either. Are current roommates living in the hot room are using a larger, more powerful A/C, and it doesn't do any better. I my opinion, if they would just make an insulating sleeve for the exhaust hose, this would work much better. I'm pretty dumbfounded by the fact that they don't make such a thing, as these units all need them. It's not the best, but I'm over joyed with it, simply because it makes the summer heat tolerable.

Bought this and works well down where I'm from in Georgia. It gets pretty hot here and this easily cooled my room and the bathroom. It's pricey but does seem to do a good job.

"This product is a joke" 2006-08-02

I bought RS ARP-900E Portable Air Conditioner - 9000 BTU from Fry's yesterday. It is over $400. Today I am going to return it. Of course, it only takes a few minutes to set up and very easy for anyone to operate it. We set it up and tried for a few hours, and then we feel extremely disappointed. If you live in the South and your room's temperature reaches 90 F and you wish to use a portable air conditioner to cool the room down, good luck. This product can only cool a little spot where it is pointing. The vent hose gets very hot and you can feel the heat like a little stove behind the air conditioner. So it cools down the air in one spot and heats up the air in another spot of the room. I read a customer's review before who believed to give it 10 years for the technology to develop. Now, I understand why he/she said that. I'll say to give it over 15 years for engineers to work on it before it is put on markets.

"don't buy this air conditioner" 2005-06-30

It does cool ok (not the greatest) but takes a lot of energy. The vent hose gets extremly warm. The water drips into its tank and the sound of the dripping is like a faucet dripping, very annoying. Tank has to be emptied every hour if you don't want to hear the dripping.
